Sterilization

At Raksha Foundation, we believe that compassion and coexistence go hand in hand. One of the most effective ways we support this vision is through our animal sterilization program, carried out under the guidelines of the Government of India’s Animal Birth Control (ABC) program.

Together with our community, veterinary partners, and volunteers, we continue to expand our sterilization efforts to ensure a future where every animal is safe, cared for, and allowed to live with dignity.

Why Sterilization Matters

Uncontrolled breeding among stray dogs and cats can lead to overpopulation, which often results in suffering — from starvation and disease to accidents and human-animal conflict. Sterilization is a humane, science-backed solution that helps break this cycle.

By focusing on sterilization, Raksha:

  • Prevents the birth of unwanted animals that may otherwise suffer on the streets.

  • Reduce aggressive behavior and territorial fighting, creating safer environments for both animals and people.

  • Control the spread of zoonotic diseases such as rabies.

  • Promote a balanced street animal population that is healthier and better integrated into the community.

ABC Program

Raksha proudly follows the Animal Birth Control (ABC) program guidelines laid out by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). Through this program, we:

  • Humanely catch community animals

  • Sterilize and vaccinate them against rabies at our partner facility, Raksha Animal Welfare Center

  • Provide post-operative care

  • Release animals back to their original locations

Path to Peaceful Coexistence

This process not only protects the animals’ rights to live in their territories peacefully but also ensures a stable and manageable stray animal population over time.

Sterilization isn't just a medical intervention — it's a commitment to the long-term well-being of animals and the communities they live in. By reducing population pressure and enhancing public health and safety, sterilization helps foster a more harmonious relationship between people and animals.
